Grow on accommodation to boost the North East economy

THE North East Technology (NET) Park at Sedgefield, County Durham is one of the fastest-growing Science Parks in the UK.

It focuses on supporting companies developing technology and products in the physical sciences, particularly printable electronics, microelectronics, photonics, nanotechnology, and their application in the fields of energy, defence, and medical-related technologies.

The ‘Grow-On Accommodation’ project which commenced earlier this year will see the construction of two buildings consisting of a mix of manufacturing areas, clean rooms and office spaces over two floors. The incubator facilities are capable of accommodating up to eight Research and Development technology-based businesses.

County Durham Development Company (CDDC) has invested £6.5m in the project being constructed by Willmott Dixon Construction.

Other facilities are available on NET Park that enables companies to grow and progress on to manufacturing operations within the same location.

As a market leader in sustainable construction, Willmott Dixon is proud to be working in partnership with a forward-thinking client like CDDC which is equally keen to ensure the construction is sourced responsibly. Renewable energy has been a main focus with Photovoltaic Cells and Air-Source Heat Pumps being maximised within both buildings.

Willmott Dixon has made fantastic progress in ensuring the local spend has been maximised, with over 95% of the subcontractors and materials sourced locally. One other major achievement on the project has been diverting over 98% of its waste from landfill. Another major focus has been in engaging with the community and assisting CDDC in raising awareness of NET Park.

The Grow On Accommodation project has been another successful procurement via the National Scape Framework. Having been through the OJEU process, this framework is providing real cost and time savings to clients. The project is on schedule to complete in November.
