REDCAR and Cleveland College has beaten off competition from across the country to deliver a new management qualification for the chemical and process sector.
The college has been awarded the contract to deliver the new Cogent approved Level 3 award in managing operations for line managers and supervisors in the industry.
A number of the region’s major employers in the sector such as SABIC, Lotte Chemicals and Huntsman Tioxide have already signed up to the first course, which starts in October, and will last through until summer 2012.
The new qualification has been developed by Cogent in collaboration with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) as a direct response to demand from employers in the sector. It has been designed specifically to help line managers and supervisors improve their technical and management skills.
Each of the students will attend four one-day workshops at Redcar and Cleveland College, which will be backed up with a mix of evening drop-in tutorial sessions, self-learning booklets and assignments, with a strong emphasis on a blended learning approach.
Redcar and Cleveland College is already an approved provider of Cogent’s Gold Standard qualifications, and delivers a wide range of science and technology related courses to full and part-time students across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sector.
Chris Coupland, commercial manager for Engineering and Technology at Redcar and Cleveland College, said: “We work very closely with employers in the chemical and process sectors to deliver high quality training that meets their needs across the full spectrum of STEM related subjects, and I am delighted that we have secured the contract to deliver this important new qualification.
“Cogent is the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, nuclear, oil and gas, petroleum and polymer industries. We are licensed by Government to help employers in these science-using industries to address their workforce development needs so that they can compete successfully.”
Redcar and Cleveland College delivers high-quality education and training opportunities to thousands of people and works with hundreds of businesses from across the north east and around the globe.
