A DEDICATED support scheme for local businesses has helped a Washington manufacturer maintain its position as the world's leading hearing aid battery producer.
Rayovac, which is based on Stephenson Industrial Estate, manufactures hundreds of millions of batteries each year. It has received ongoing assistance through Tyne and Wear Development Company's Strategic Account Management (SAM) programme.
Designed to accelerate growth plans, the programme has helped Rayovac with everything from on-site logistical improvements, training and skills to lean manufacturing, energy efficiency enhancements, award applications and even marketing placements.
With advice from Tyne and Wear Development Company, Rayovac has also been able to secure funding towards new manufacturing equipment.
Glen Rutherford, Rayovac's plant manager, said: "We're the market leaders in this sector, but it's a competitive industry and we constantly have to innovate with new products like our range of mercury free batteries to maintain our position.
"Tyne and Wear Development Company has been a real ally in this area. They've got to know the business and the management team and their understanding of what we do has enabled them to provide invaluable support on several occasions that we couldn't have done without."
