Fastest 50 highlights region's resilience
THIS year businesses have experienced some of the toughest trading conditions the country has ever seen. The economic downturn has been challenging but because of this, the Fastest 50, and what is represents, has never been more crucial.
The resilience and sheer determination shown by businesses in the North East is really something to be proud of. Tough decisions have had to be made, and businesses have been forced to assess every aspect of their operations to ensure they are fighting fit. Despite this, the business community in North East England has remained positive, and has laid the groundwork for what I am sure will be a bright future when the upturn arrives – and it will.
Throughout the downturn, our businesses have reacted decisively and with real conviction, seeking out support and using it to strengthen their companies. It’s this pragmatic approach that means we’re still able to celebrate the success of North East businesses now, and to recognise those 50 that have secured exceptional results, despite the tough conditions they’ve faced this year.
While there are still many more challenges ahead, at BE-NE we feel strongly that the support network we have in this region gives businesses the best possible chance to thrive and grow. The demand for Business Link’s services has never been greater, and we’ve streamlined our processes to ensure that companies get the most effective and efficient support available.
Our team of Business Link advisers have delivered support to 34,344 companies over the past year, providing advice, practical guidance, training and brokerage, delivering some exceptional results in the process. We are determined to build on this success and ensure that the North East becomes the best place in the UK to start and grow a business.
Our international trade team, which works on behalf of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in the region, is also providing invaluable support to businesses hoping to succeed in international markets, as well as assisting overseas companies to bring high-quality investment to the North East – all of which will lead to a more prosperous region.
In addition to the support we have given to established businesses, the work we have done with pre-start enterprises shows that the entrepreneurial spirit in this region is alive and well. Business Link has helped 4,384 individuals make their business vision into a reality, which shows the confidence and ambition that the region possesses.
I’m extremely proud to lead a company that, through Business Link, the North East England Investment Centre (NEEIC), UKTI and the North East England Service Provider Register (NEESPR), has played a part in helping secure the future of so many businesses, and in the process, has helped support the region’s economy through such a critical period.
The companies in this year’s Fastest 50 deserve special recognition for their achievements, particularly when put in the context of the unprecedented economic climate they have faced. It is encouraging to see how well the North East is resisting the effects of the downturn and we look forward to helping many more of the region’s businesses to prosper and grow – perhaps providing them with the support that will allow them to make this list next year.
Business Link has a team of experts who offer advice, help and information to individuals and companies across the region, giving them access to the ‘business brains’ who will help to get their business idea off the ground, or grow their existing company.
