Sunderland soars up the table

Stadium of Light

SUNDERLAND is the shooting star on the business side of North East football. It has rocketed up 155 places to 82 in this year’s Top 200, its income up by around £1m to £64.4m.

It still earns less than Newcastle United which, despite its turnover – down around £13.3m in a lower division – still rose nine places to 64.

But Sunderland is the bigger employer with 530 staff, against Newcastle’s 395 and the 166 employees at Middlesbrough.

In the finances Middlesbrough, whose chairman Steve Gibson has refuted claims that his five-star luxury hotel at Hurworth on Tees has been fed football club cash, is a climber this year too. It gains 18 places to reach 126, though its turnover was around £16m down.
